“Fleeting”
2024
Ceramic
Memories of childhood began to infiltrate as I pondered the idea of holding onto something; containing it. The innocence of youth is so beautiful yet fleeting. This piece reflects my earliest recollection of searching for Lady Slippers behind my house in Massachusetts. Peeking into each petal, looking for the wonders of fairies and creatures, making a narrative in my head about their lives. This flower serves as a symbol of my youth.
The Lady Slipper is currently a threatened species in New England, so the physicality of it is also fleeting. These are both losses I wish to hold on to. The monochromatic glaze allows the beauty of the piece to speak, yet the vibrancy of it is lacking. This is symbolic of my relation to this memory now. It is tangible, I can see it, but the color I once lived in has muted. The flower remains at the bottom, a new petal begins to bloom at the top. I am grounded by these stories, as they continue to grow with me, even if they look a little different.
