“Distorted”, 2023

This series of work focuses on the realities of body dysmorphic disorder, societal pressures, and the ramifications of them. I have always wished that people could take a look into my mind and understand the things I saw in myself. My expressions of dissatisfaction and discomfort manifested through an endless gaze into my reflection, yet every time, it looked different. Through my work in Distorted, I wanted to shed a new perspective into the world of body image alongside mental illness, going beyond what people often think it to be. It isn't as black and white as refusing to eat or crying over the scale. It is painful and nuanced.

Each image forms a cohesive group yet has its own story. I wanted people to feel something from these, whether that be discomfort, confrontation, sadness, or even familiarity. Through my images, I wanted to show that this is an everyday struggle and most importantly, that you are not alone in this journey.
